Small Garden Design

Any size of outdoor space has the potential to be a beautiful, lush oasis - it just means that the design has to work even harder.

With years of experience in designing and building small gardens, we understand how to make the space ideal, whether it is a family space or courtyard that encourages relaxation.

The rules of small garden design

We’ve ripped up the rulebook.

Your outdoor space can be what you want it to be. No matter how bijou the dimensions, it can be the outdoor play area for your children or an extension of your home as an outdoor living and dining space.

Our small garden design projects have ticked many boxes.

  • Bold – with small gardens being bold is key to success. The assumption is to ‘go small’ and yet, opting for larger features and furniture makes it feel and look bigger.
  • Planting that magnifies the spacebuying larger, blousier plants makes the smaller garden feel bigger. Choose a mix of evergreens and seasonal plants for all-round flavour with summertime colour.
  • Plant a treeevery garden, even the smallest and most minimal of outdoor areas need a tree. Offering shade for you, local wildlife will love it too and just as important, it offers height to the small garden.
  • Embrace straight linesthis doesn’t mean you can’t have curves but designs based on straight lines and interacting geometric shapes improve the layout and help the eye to travel throughout the space.
  • Simplicity, not cluttertrying to shoehorn too much into the small garden confuses the landscape. Prioritise the function of the garden – will it be the place to sit and relax or is it predominantly a place for the children to play.
  • Detail, detail, detaildetail is not clutter. It pays to sweat the small stuff, like deciding on a small cluster of materials to use. In a smaller garden, too many materials also add to the feeling of clutter.

Bountiful boundaries – boundaries are critical to the success of garden design. Well-thought-out boundaries can push the edges of the small garden further back. Use darker colours at the boundary so that the plants and shrubs stand their ground.

Create your own style of garden

Versatility is key to successful styling and design of the smaller, compact garden space. We have a range of solutions. For example, we’ve built hidden trampolines in the small garden so that when the day’s play is finished, the shielding door can be lowered, allowing the lawn area to be used instead.

Or how about embracing a particular style? The colonial look, complete with wooden fences and covered decked area gave a new-build property a distinct style of its own. Coupled with careful design of the garden, hard landscaping created different levels in the garden, adding interest, depth and colour.
