Making the most of your rooftop is about making the most of the space for you and for the local environment. Within the town and cityscape, greenery in the shape of established trees and shrubs can be in short supply.

Adding plants to the roof garden will encourage cleaner air, offsetting some of the air pollutions that lingers, but also encourages wildlife deeper into the urban landscape. 

Designing a rooftop garden, our team take everything into consideration:

• • Suitability – not every flat rooftop is immediately suitable for a garden space. Access needs to be safe and secure, as does the structure itself. A roof garden adds weight to the top of the building and so there needs to be a structural assessment to ensure that any changes will not compromise the integrity of the roof or building.
  • Regulations and permissions – in some areas, especially if the building is listed or in a conservation area, a roof terrace could be seen as an additional floor and you may need permission before you install a garden. Check the deeds to the property or your rental agreement. The UK planning portal is also an excellent source of current planning information.

• Safety –  safety will be an integral element to the roof garden design our team creates, including access and use. This could mean building a slightly higher boundary ad using glass balustrades and railings.

Work with the weather – wind, in particular, will affect the design and planting of a roof garden. Sun can also be harsh and so any design and planting scheme needs to work with the elements and not against them.

Roof terraces and gardens work best when they are simple, minimal but with detail that gives it depth and warmth. ‘Fussy’ designs, such as an abundance of cottage plants, won’t work as well in a garden that is as exposed as this.
