The good news is a small garden doesn’t mean clipping your family garden design dreams! You may want us to design the garden around features that are already there or start from scratch, introducing hard landscaping, clever planting and zones for use. 

• Sun and shade – for everyone to enjoy the garden, it’s important to factor in sun and shade to the design. This could be a case of including a shady pergola for afternoon play or clever planting for shade throughout the day.

• Zoning the garden – zones give areas tasks or rules to play and can be an easy way of making sure that you have the right things in the right areas of the garden. This means you all get to enjoy the space!

Sunken trampolines, for example, are a clever innovation that ticks so many boxes. To begin with, they are safer as children are less likely to fall from a height but the real advantage lies in the design detail. In some cases, a ‘lid’ can be placed over the top of the trampoline. We’ve used this detail in many a family-garden, ideal when space is limited. It allows the area to be used for something else when the trampoline is not being used, such as a seating area for al fresco dining or another play area.
